Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus
both used the word "Cathay" to refer
to today's "China".

Khitan is a name of a para-Mongolic nomadic
people who set up a country named Liao from
916 to 1125 in the northwest of Han people's Song.
Two countries, two peoples. Khitan and Han
were at wars on and off for hundreds of years.

For whoever knows the history, learning that
Cathay (Khitan, Liao) used to represent "China"
could be a shock, since Chinese people are
taught being the heir and offsprings of the
Han (Song). The enemy of Cathay (Khitan, Liao).

Marco Polo used two different names
to refer to "China": Cathay and
Manji. Cathay for the North. Manji
for the south. Manji could be 蠻子
(barbarian) 🙀.

Marco was just a nice cool lad
from a land far far away.
Northern people called Southern
people Manji. He simply copied that.

Accoring to historical records,
Marco Polo arrived in "China" in
1275. Supposedly 150 years after
the end of Liao (916 - 1125 AD),
the so-called Cathay, set up by
Khitan. As a buddy buddy(?) to
Kublai Khan, there was no reason
that he got confused with the name
of the Khan's kingdom, Da-Yuan,
meaning "the great Yuan". Not Cathay.

For an "orthodox" Chinese historian,
Liao, as a "dynasty", was never even
on the center stage. For somebody
who is aware of the "official" version
of that period of history, Liao
was full of mystery (unfortunately
marginalized) with few documents left,
an extinct language and a writing
script completely obsolete.

But the biggest puzzle is... after
the fall of Liao and West Liao (Qara
Khitai), millions of Khitan people
were gone. Like evaporated from
the face of the planet. Like they
never existed. Let's see... after
the breakdown of the Mongol Empire,
the Mongol people continued to
live on their ancestral grasslands,
and the Manchu people remained
after the Qing collapsed.

No language. No writing system. No
people. How could they (Khitan) manage
to maintain their influence? The
global influence in that case.

And how could Cathay, the name, keep
echoing around the world, other than
"Cathay" itself though, for more
than one thousand years?

So my guess is...
Cathay might be a term that
could be traced back to
the Khazar (Jews).
